Time to move out! This will be the last post on the Blogspot site. From here on out you'll find this blog remade and more readable at <a href="http://www.ferrytrails.com/"><span style="color: red;">www.FerryTrails.com</span></a>. It is already up and running with more features including maps, tags and other new features.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Since Google gives a user little control, I can't tell if you are an occasional visitor or regular subscriber. If you are a subscriber then I can't move your subscription over - you'll have to subscribe at the new site (it's also more user friendly, I hope). If you are an occasional visitor, then just bookmark the new site and you are done.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Thanks for following along - hope to see you at the new website!</div>

This is a full sized replica of the structure of the same name found in the UK. Though astronomically correct, its primary purpose was not intended as a Druid calendar but as a memorial for those from Washington State who lost their lives in WW I. Looks a little rough around the edges doesn't it. So does the new site but in the next few weeks it should be ready to go. The curious are welcome to click this <a href="http://www.ferrytrails.com/" target="_blank">link</a> and poke around. Feedback would be appreciated.</div>

Though we enjoy the 4th of July as a national holiday with all the summer fun we can muster, it is also a holiday that didn't come easy. Repeatedly men and women have given time (& often their lives) to preserve our freedoms. This memorial is in Oak Harbor, Washington, home to Whidbey Island Naval Station. It commemorates men who never returned from ship hunting and bombing patrols during WW II.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Oak Harbor was one such base for those who flew these patrol planes. Formally called PBY Catalina, they had several nicknames. Since it flew many night missions against Japanese shipping, it was called the "Black Cat". When used for rescue at sea, many crewmen called it "Flying Dumbo". Though the Navy retired these planes after WW II, many can still be found flying mail and supplies along the Amazon, used for fish tracking in the Pacific and all around the world as fire retardant bombers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If the occasion arises today, thank a service man for helping to preserve those freedoms we celebrate today. Happy Fourth Of July to Colby VanCamp and his fellow Navy crewmen and women.</div>

Lava Beds National Monument is as much about what's underground as above. With over 700 caves the Monument has largest concentration of lava tube caves in North America. Tennessee takes top honors for total number of caves of all kind as it averages 4 for every square mile in the state. This is Valentine Cave, so named for the date it was discovered in 1933.<br />

The ceiling varied from smooth to stippled, as above. In the small area we explored near the entrance, portions of the cave roof were iridescent when hit by light. There is a notable thumb of land, sometimes called the Peninsula, sometimes called Petroglyph Point, or on some maps, Castle Rock. Depending on which side you are on, catches either first or last light. Once surrounded by water, these cliffs are now high and dry.<br />

Look one more time again at the previous picture. Towards the bottom, there is a patch of white with horizontal stripes. In 1917, Charles Coppock, born at the century mark, decided to express his frustration with being underage to join US forces during WW I. The result was this flag, dated August 15, 1917. He rowed out to a nearby spot, anchored a platform and painted what you see above. After 94 years some of the color has faded out.</div>

This medicine pole, also called a medicine flag, was placed at what is called the Captain Jack Stronghold. This pole was placed by the local Klamath Indians to commemorate what the Modoc Indians did to fend off the US Cavalry many years ago.<br />

<br />
This is the northernmost edge of what is known as the Captain Jack Stronghold. Named after the fearless Modoc leader of the same name, this site remains important to Native Americans. Tule Lake was once much bigger. The southern shore touched where the sign in the foreground is and water covered the landscape north and east as far as the distant dark hills. Most of the recovered land is now either part of Lava Bed National Monument, The Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge or privately farmed.<br />

To give you some understanding of the difficulty that the cavalry had in attempting to oust Captain Jack, this natural trench line was one of many that crisscrossed this patch of hostile lava. This natural fort was good enough, that at first, just 51 Modocs repelled over 300 army & militia soldiers.</div>

This is what is left of a small fort that was garrisoned by troops lead by Major General Edward Canby. Their job was to attempt to corral rebellious Modoc tribal members, including Captain Jack, and put them back on a nearby reservation. For his effort, the general was killed by Captain Jack. This came after an illustrious career established in part by Canby's actions during the Civil War.<br />

Not in many public places can you find a cross without a lawyer attached. This monument is on the Lava Beds National Monument and the inscription is almost as notable as finding a cross on Federal land. It says, "Gen. Canby, USA, was murdered here by the Modocs April 11, 1873". A medicine pole and a cross give testimony to two people who served their respective nations without fear. War is like that, isn't it. Sometimes with great meaning, sometimes meaningless.</div>

<br />
Note not just the geese but the light and dark bands of green. This is why farmers put fake bald eagles on sprouting fields. Here the fields are managed by the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Where they feed on the Refuge isn't as critical as it is away from the lake. Theses fields are intended to host the birds. Note the contrast of white against the cliffs. Those are Snow Geese.<br />

A quick honk of the car horn gets most of these birds to look up. Again, parts of the field are nearly barren and others are still quite green - all from where the geese choose to feed.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Like the Fall River Valley, many in the Tule Lake area make a living on what water provides. As the names suggests, one gets water from rivers and the other from a lake. Delivery of Tule Lake water comes via irrigation pipes (above).</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY3Tu3Q1AExCMT15sFSmzfUjyIy3x4ALIYPCspHu4Wa8uT_i1YQH-1GN9H2EulRLo_ToRXvZ8_qoJ6lH5IY0stwrzF5KQD07BQCNdNfP4-gRtDSFPp2jPRfuHGJIKIdeAIbDy8o94tp-JF/s1600/Tule+Lake+483_HDR-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY3Tu3Q1AExCMT15sFSmzfUjyIy3x4ALIYPCspHu4Wa8uT_i1YQH-1GN9H2EulRLo_ToRXvZ8_qoJ6lH5IY0stwrzF5KQD07BQCNdNfP4-gRtDSFPp2jPRfuHGJIKIdeAIbDy8o94tp-JF/s640/Tule+Lake+483_HDR-1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
From 1908 to 1930 one of the larger bodies of water in a chain of lakes was dredged and converted to farmland. That would be Tule Lake, which is considered a part of the Upper Klamath Basin. This drainage covers portions of California and Oregon.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
All that reclaimed farmland has been generous with its bounty. Besides grain, the area produces potatoes, sugar beets and alfalfa. A sizable amount of horseradish is grown here too. On a summer day, the aroma coming from a field of this leafy rootstock is wonderfully aromatic and not at all suggestive of the taste.<br />

Though 100 miles removed from the Fall & Pit River areas previously mentioned, there is still a common denominator - Mt. Shasta. Away from the lake itself, things are not so green - much more the arid landscape. 40 air miles away and 700' higher, the desert defines the landscape as much as the mountain does.Bill Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14378699275582075247noreply@blogger.com0Tule Lake, California 96134, USA41.8975658 -121.5336905000000341.8030163 -121.69505200000003 41.9921153 -121.37232900000004tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7459020745121579687.post-44758866658064130172013-06-02T03:00:00.000-07:002013-06-02T03:00:07.673-07:00NO, NO, NO!<br />

It started innocuously with a standard sign seen commonly in many places. This place was a parking lot near a lake at McArthur-Burney Falls State Park. What held my eye the longest? This old 1949 Ford Ready-Mixed Concrete truck, which was very close in year to the first mixers that our family owned. The story behind all this creative iron is a rock, sand and concrete manufacturer called Packway Materials and a man that spends his slow winters creating great folk art. If you thought some of the other places mentioned in the blog have been out of the way, go see where this place is on the adjoining map link on the sidebar.</div>

This pano gives you a small sense of the scope and flavor of the Fall River Valley. With Shasta anchoring on the right and Lassen on the left, you have a whole lot of beautiful in between. Fall River has more farm land than timber and seems to have plenty of water for irrigation.<br />

In places there is enough water to grow rice. This dredge sat adjacent to some wild rice growing fields. I never did find out what purpose it served. Besides rice, there are broad fields of alfalfa and hay and beef cattle everywhere. And of course all this water draws a multitude of waterfowl. Those are Canadian Geese in the shot above.<br />

The Fall and Pit Rivers come together near the boundary of the two valleys. Perhaps not at showy as Burney Falls, Pit River Falls still has its own beauty. The bridge in view used to be the main road into the area until realignment of California Hwy 299 bypassed it.<br />

Still remote by today's standards, the former Fort Crook was extremely isolated in the 1850s & 60s. It was at least a 10 day ride to the Presidio in San Francisco, assuming the weather cooperated. After the Civil War the Fort was abandoned. One marker commemorates the fort site, the other an early guide who accompanied the first soldiers into the area. The man who founded the fort later became better known as General George Crook who became a decorated hero of the Civil War.</div>

<span style="text-align: left;">Though we'd been through a portion of this far northeast corner of California before, it turns out we really hadn't seen more than what driving on a through highway allowed. Until now. Two big valleys, several spectacular waterfalls and a host of natural and man made wonders were waiting be discovered. Above is the first of two large valleys - the Pit River Valley. The basin is a blend of farming and timber, with logging being the bigger industry. The valley sits within sight of both Lassen (to the south) and Shasta (to the northwest).</span><br />

Above is Burney Falls. Beginning as a spring that percolates up through the lava, Burney Creek delivers 10,000,000 gallons every day, all year long. The water eventually reaches the Pit River. The Pit accounts for 80% of the flow of the Sacramento River.</div>

Though Crystal Lake has been around since 1927, it isn't considered an old timer. Not far away was the Hat Creek Fish Hatchery built in 1887 to originally raise salmon. In 1915 the eruption of Mt. Lassen threw enough mud and debris that it knocked out the remaining run of salmon and for years greatly diminished the trout population. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
A portion of the land that the monastery occupies once belonged to Leland Stanford, founder of the university of that same name. Though many of the buildings (above) that Stanford erected are on the monastery grounds, it isn't Stanford that is more connected to the Monastery. It is William Randolph Hearst.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigaA7dQrKOVCVK5JX0xdM9HZEMtemig1F72VsjTB_MDL1Sct3Vkrhjzimq56rYPfvFVb89REvDEz-vqQYCI4aMPf5UWxRSSLeqTH9S9Pm9MSlE6zSKEKco9Qqi6I469lqBrVFWdLY6aeCl/s1600/Clairvaux+Monastery+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigaA7dQrKOVCVK5JX0xdM9HZEMtemig1F72VsjTB_MDL1Sct3Vkrhjzimq56rYPfvFVb89REvDEz-vqQYCI4aMPf5UWxRSSLeqTH9S9Pm9MSlE6zSKEKco9Qqi6I469lqBrVFWdLY6aeCl/s640/Clairvaux+Monastery+3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Years ago, as Hearst was building his empire and his legacy structures, he came across a decrepit 13th century Spanish Chapter House (another former Cistercian monastery). In 1931 he dismantled it and brought the stones to California, intending it for a grand estate near Shasta. The Depression overtook Hearst's ambition and the stones were used instead to pay the City of San Francisco in lieu of taxes owed. For 60 years they sat in Golden Gate park. In 1994 they were given to the Abbey of Clairvaux. It has been a long struggle by the Monastery to use the stones as intended (above).<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuTkZ6rr56nU5w_HLMUT6X9DsLReRcRK-Bx8miGn-HARqO12S23PW3Pnz6PLcvZqmL0JKMnwwej3j-ow6t9hWQ67iI1R_Sygo7n52TJwa758x_p3dMl_SXo2k7ayqOMsHG-tiF5xr4fLiN/s1600/Clairvaux+Monastery+13+BL.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuTkZ6rr56nU5w_HLMUT6X9DsLReRcRK-Bx8miGn-HARqO12S23PW3Pnz6PLcvZqmL0JKMnwwej3j-ow6t9hWQ67iI1R_Sygo7n52TJwa758x_p3dMl_SXo2k7ayqOMsHG-tiF5xr4fLiN/s640/Clairvaux+Monastery+13+BL.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Though Hearst made detailed notes when the buildings were taken apart, the instructions and the stones were in deteriorated condition when reclaimed. The stones are around 900 years old and there are few masons today that have the kind of knowledge of the masonry methods used in the Middle Ages. There is also the issue of money. Since I was here last, they have instituted a new program<span style="color: red;"> <a href="http://www.sacredstones.org/" target="_blank"><span style="color: red;">"Sacred Stones"</span></a></span>, which they hope will provide the energy and money to move the project along.<br />

<br />
In the year 2,000 the monks returned to Leland Stanford first use of the land: they planted their own vineyard and are working to produce several varieties of red and white wines. As Benjamin Franklin said: "Wine is constant proof that God loves and and wants to see us happy." Perhaps the good Cistercian monks of Clairvaux would say to that: "Amen!"<br />

<br />
It started about 110 years ago when the first two varieties of olives (Mission and Sevillanos) were planted in Corning, California. Now the Chamber of Commerce proclaims Corning as the "Olive Capital of the World", with nearly 100 varieties.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZiPA9488ulG5OiWn1saW0UxJ7Wi1l-Xb-h8pbv_qCOsKZPlD-BLUxvaTPvq5k1TArsVCDnx4MPejK-kemm_2JOa1T6hAYq9ABF-g-DRhVf8kIyu-nO7a3oejg1oetFdnOrjOn1rrsbWw8/s1600/Corning+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="419" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZiPA9488ulG5OiWn1saW0UxJ7Wi1l-Xb-h8pbv_qCOsKZPlD-BLUxvaTPvq5k1TArsVCDnx4MPejK-kemm_2JOa1T6hAYq9ABF-g-DRhVf8kIyu-nO7a3oejg1oetFdnOrjOn1rrsbWw8/s640/Corning+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Farmers still produce the staples of cocktail and canned olives but new markets call for new products. The Lucero brand of Extra Virgin olive oils comes from one such grower. Dewey Lucero is the third generation of his family to grow and the first to step them into the relatively new market (for the US) of specialty olive oils.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7QC-epyI6saxZmh3BKl0L2172oYO3wyKVEk3qtWuGMv1RCMeegGOyl8w44OqARxYaXemDl6dGz91IsRRnfw1cCQaTAXWQ4ghTgHP3aFlNj6yd5bT0rM80TRv0YU04xJeeTexFqIk4xSdI/s1600/Corning+9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="419" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7QC-epyI6saxZmh3BKl0L2172oYO3wyKVEk3qtWuGMv1RCMeegGOyl8w44OqARxYaXemDl6dGz91IsRRnfw1cCQaTAXWQ4ghTgHP3aFlNj6yd5bT0rM80TRv0YU04xJeeTexFqIk4xSdI/s640/Corning+9.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To get an idea of the size of this growing market, their <a href="http://www.lucerooliveoil.com/shop" target="_blank"><span style="color: #274e13;">website</span></a> lists not just 8 varieties of Extra Virgin oil but a nearly identical number of flavored oils, nine kinds of balsamic vinegars and yet more with tapenades (dips/spreads), new line of mustards and, hold me back, a "Chocolate Infused Extra Virgin Olive Oil".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The manufacture of Extra Virgin seems simple on the face of it as it is the first press of olives that yields that kind of oil. However the Lucero family has been successful in blending the science with enough art that they have scored numerous gold medals in exhibitions around the globe. Last month they earned two golds from an international competition in Japan. Lucero already has a thriving mail order business (above), now they have expanded into the the retail side with their first store in Portland, Oregon. </div>

Science has kept up with the growing of the crop as well. As the demand for more olives has increased, the shape and nature of the groves has changed. Above is a young but producing grove. Note trees are trained to grow upright (no canopy) and in closer proximity. No longer do trees and olives have to be hand pruned or picked, mechanical groomers and pickers have taken over. </div>

The Petaluma Valley, home to Santa Rosa, Petaluma and other lesser communities, used to be known as a premier growing area for Apples. First a part of a large Mexican land grant, the town was founded not long after Alexander Duncan arrived in 1877 to began a sawmill operation. By the 1880s there were two hotels, a saloon, a meat market, blacksmith and livery stables and this general store.<br />

For almost 60 years trains hauled freight (and passengers) to the the terminal in Sausalito. We sure don't think of Sausalito as being a railroad town, as trendy as it is now. The ledger in the foreground recorded the daily flow of rail traffic and the old fashioned phones at left kept the stationmasters in touch with each other and the outside world. It had to be a pretty busy place with three telephones.</div>

Served by the North Pacific Coast Railroad and its unusually colored cabooses, the owners began building a narrow gauge steam line in 1874. It reached Duncans Mills not long after the mill opened. In 1902 new owners, at what must have been at great expense, transformed the track to standard gauge and installed powerlines to serve new electric engines. Redwood lumber remained the dominant item of freight. Since shutting down in in the 1930s, all of the right-of-way eventually became abandoned. The line stretched 93 miles to the Bay - what a wonderfully scenic journey it must have been as a passenger.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The event was held near Duncans Mills which is on the Russian River in Northern California between Santa Rosa and the Coast.</div>

There is an entire wing of Airstream owners who revere the vintage trailers (made 25 or more years ago). This man not only has a beautifully restored vintage trailer, he pulls it with an near vintage Buick. The motorhome with the awning out in the background is even an Airstream product.</div>

There are cooks aplenty on potluck night - and mouths enough to eat near everything. <span style="text-align: center;">This particular gathering drew about 100 people which translated into 55 trailers and a few motor homes. You can barely see the folks at the far end of the long line of tables.</span></div>

The burro wanted to know instead if he could have a taste of the potluck and maybe a little wine.</div>
